Do As I Say, Not As I Do

One of the most paraphrased statements still remains “Religion is the Opium of the Masses”, the sigh of the oppressed. Just like the bourgeoisie introduced religion as an antidote to the sufferings of the proletariats, an idea that there would be a future reward for the sufferings of today, churches have adopted unique and distinct lifestyles which they believe members must adhere to in order to make heaven and like the leviathan, absolute rights are given to the church to dictate how the lives of members are run.

Every church as we know them have their peculiarities, the white garment ones with barefoot and those who cover their feet, the chosen, who wear gospel banners as clothes, the Pentecostals whose women wear trousers and their men fry their hair , the faiths, who don’t take medication and never do blood transfusions and the deeper life who don’t make up, wear ornament, elaborate outfits even at weddings, don’t  watch television and even substitute “akwa oche” for headscarf. A lot of churches as well exchange bibles at weddings instead of wedding rings.

One wonders the extent to which the propagators of these rules live up to the same rules themselves, so you can imagine the public outcry when John Kumuyi got married with all pump and pageantry which is the opposite of what is expected of the members.

Now , I’m not criticizing , but like I’ve always said, your way of life should be a personal decision, you alone can decide what rights to give others over you and when to say enough is enough. Quit the complaints, if you feel the church isn’t doing right by you, either move on or draw up a round table conference to decide the way forward.

Churches on their part have to learn to live above reproach, lead by example and never give people reason to question their actions, unless they expect their members to live on the principle of “ do as I say, not as I do”.

  4. I was equally incensed when i saw these pictures. So unfair but i'm happy cuz it will be only a stupid church member who will continue in the former way after seeing that it is possible to look like this! I hope that this is the FACE OF THE NEW DEEPER LIFE.

  5. We are striving to imitate Christ which is why we go by the name Christians. Now when someone who claims to be closer to him decides to impose some man made laws on his flock, he should be ready to live by example!
And for anyone who would come up with the defense that I shouldn't criticize a man of God (by the way I'm not a woman of satan), take this: if you don't want me to be in your business then stay out of the line light!!!

  8. Follow follow tinz!

On judgement day, God's not going to ask me which church I went to on this side. He's gonna look at my life and how I walked with Him.

  9. That's his son and he must not abide by their old school rules. He is not Kumuyi the G.O of Deeper Life, and that girl the son married is decent for a bride. Kumuyi's wife can't dress like that. The son is more enlightened and has his own life to live. Don't judge so you won't be judged. Salvation is a personal race how we live or behave is between me and my God, let's all strive to make Heaven. Datzall.

  11. Daezy Dwin and JK, i'm sorry but i disagree. Let me give u instances. You see the injustices we complain about in Nigeria? Can we all leave Nigeria if we don't like it? No. Imagine if you attended a school and wore a drab school uniform for three years. Then the headmistress' daughter came to the school and started wearing mufti and Jimmy Choos, how would you feel? Raise the bar, if u wore the drab uniform to graduate and you can never undo that, u have those pictures forever when you could have had it differently! Think about it. Listen, the bride looks decent and gorgeous and sweet. Undisputed. But not by deeper Life standards and if for years they have denied other brides looking anything but like mummies if they must wed and they admitted this, it is double standards and unless u are saying there should be a different set of rules for different people, this should make you very angry. Think of all the brides looking on now and reflecting on their own wedding days, all because they chose to be obedient, which is in itself a not bad thing, but with the hope that the "discipline" and rules would be applied across board. True, Kumuyi's son and wife are a new generation, but as far as i know, Deeper Life rules have not changed, so unless u tell me that that wedding did not take place in a deeper life church, this is unacceptable.

When we complain about societal problems, we must learn to relate them to seemingly mundane things. When we complain about inequality between the rich and poor, politicians and the rest, we must not be afraid to say it as it is once it involves a Man-of-God or whatever. We should, can, may and will shout as loud as we can cuz it's not right. And so long as we say that if they don't like it they should leave, it is to the same extent that we are saying that if we don't like how things are done in Nigeria, we should all pack up and leave. We will not, no more than everyone can desert Deeper Life church. we will stay here and occupy Nigeria until we see change, just like Deeper Life members should stay and Occupy Deeper life and at most demand a public apology or a public statement that ok ". . . in line with the fact that life has moved on, we the people of Deeper Life church hereby endorse the wearing of earrings and makeup and fitted gowns and so and so and so . . ." Shikena!!!

  12. I am a serious advocate of people been themselves. My problem with christiendom in Nigeria especially pentecostalism is the way they follow hook line and sinker the words and laws that eminate from their leaders. Well this one is an eye opener I hope. You need to see what people do in the name of followership. I shed tears...
