Has Holy Communion Become Pedestrian?

Once in a while Pholly tries to drag me to church, each time she does that I have this nagging feeling that she has conspired with her pastor to collect my small change lol! Anyway backed by some unknown forces, she managed to drag me to Pastor Ituah Ighodalo’s Trinity House yesterday.

To say it was a humbling experience would be an understatement, I felt an aura of grace, so thick that I could almost touch it. The pastor coupled with the whole setting completely sold the scripture to me, so much that I even took Holy Communion. while downing the whole mix of tasteless flat white substance and a drop of an unknown sugary stuff signifying the body and blood of Christ  I remembered taking holy communion as kid, that’s when we were given a piece of bread and a half cup of Ribena, that was when taking communion was enjoyable.

Pholly ( Remember her? the one that stole my Indian Rice)
Pholly ofcourse disapproved, not the fact that I partook because she knows I'm holy but of the fact that Pentecostal churches have made Holy Communion pedestrian, a free for all ritual where anybody can now walk into a church and partake regardless of the baggage of sin they carry. My bestie has a catholic background therefore tends to lean towards the belief that one has to be in tune and in peace with God, if necessary go for confession and then atone for their sins to be able to partake.

This is definitely not my turf so I'm throwing it open:

  • Is it right for people to just walk into a church and take Holy Communion?
  • Should churches ask members to gauge their level of pureness before partaking?
  • What are your personal views on Holy Communion? Do you always feel worthy to partake?

  3. Pholly..don't give up on her o, she's a soul in search of answers...

My church leans towards the Catholic style, but these days, a lot of things are changing and with the popularity of Pentecostal doctrines, we are forced to accept it...by the way, their fruits are showing...

  5. @ Vivian, I really wish I could sue her but it will fall back on me. She's one cross I will carry for the rest of my life I guess. Thank you Skuri, the Lord is my muscle. I will not give up. I totally agree with you. I have catholic background and I was made to understand there are conditions attached to takn Holy communion which include bn in the spirit with no blemish . And if there is any you have to confess . I am reluctant to take Holy communion because I don't feel worthy of takn it all the times . And I feel I need to settle some things with God before I can take it .I am amazed with the way they pass the trays of the bread and wine to everybody and I look like d bad one who doesn't want to eat the body of Christ.

  6. To bring my Catholic teaching to bear: we are always reminded during Mass that receiving of the Holy Communion is for those who are prepared in the usual way and are also in a state of grace, also we are made to understand that the Body of Christ(Communion) gives Life to those who receive it Worthily and gives death/condemnation to those who receive it carelessly. So will I rather stay put on the chair if I have doubts about my worthiness than to go and receive because I am the only one remaining on the pew after others have gone(this always happens!)

  9. No wonder! I talk am say you dey go Church once in a red moon, naim make Communion dey you like Jesus shake ya hand. Anyway, Communion is simply a ritual that reminds you of the promises of Christ and it doesn't need an elaborate preparation to get it. I do have Communion wafers at home and I dont need a priest to take one with a sip of wine (or Coke, if that's what I can afford). The essence is on the state of your spirit afterwards.
