Like most people these days who rely on social networks for breaking news, I logged on to facebook 2weeks ago and learnt that the Lagos State Government has initiated what it calls Lagos State Resident Registration Agency ( LASRRA) with centers in different parts of the state.
What this means is that as a resident, either indigene or ‘immigrant’, you’ll be duly registered, giving the State privileged information about yourself like where you live, what you do, who you live with, how many people you share a room with etc, therefore, if you’re a flat owner or ‘perching’, the government will know, if you’re a hanger-on without a job and part of the millions populating Lagos unnecessarily, the State will know. Coupled with the compulsory sim registration, this exercise will help track offenders of different sorts and I bet it will require everyone carry identity cards.
This ultimately makes the Lagos State Government the real Big Brother, all seeing and all knowing. Believe me I’m impressed with this development because it will help the government plan better for the people and I’ve always wondered why our government in totality can’t come up with a reliable database of it’s citizenry.
But does everyone share my sentiments? That was my initial worry, especially this heated period of inter- state deportations and allegations of tribalism in the state’s activities.
Are people going to respond to this positively? Or will it be an exercise in futility?
